And then there it finally is! It was about time that the sleazy rock and roll metallers of Superchrist released an album on a label that took care on everything. I admit that the CDRs and the black-and-white covers had something and surely had their charm but the band deserves better, I said that from the first album I reviewed. Their first label debut CD is a full-length live album with a title that leaves very, very little to the imagination: "Heavy Metal Tonight".

A live album is always something that comes rather close to a 'best-of'-set, and that is exactly what Superchrist displays here. And that all in a sound that is really remarkably good. And with all the catchy Motörhead-alike rock and roll metal its pretty clear that they have a high success guarantee, they like to describe it as "this is a hit single or you are a dickhead" - not too much to doubt on, right? This actually the kind of music that I could best describe as no-nonsense music from a band that just like to kick some serious ass - you know, again that Motörhead thing! With a top score set of songs like "Stand Up And Shit", "Frano Fucked Yoko Ono", "Old Fast And Hard", "To Hell And Back" and "Fuck You Twice" not too much can go wrong. The only disadvantage of this CD is that there is very little audible of the audience of that night, I would like to hear how the reactions are - for I would like to see the band live, definitely. It also is pretty cool to hear that there is also another album re-released through Autopsy Kitchen Records and there are some other things tin the pipeline too. It was about time that this band got hooked up and got a proper release. Up to the next and buy this or you are a dickhead!

BESTIAL ONSLAUGHT

HEAVY METAL TONIGHT is a live album put out by the raucous Chicago band Superchrist, whose 13-track ode to metal's lowest common denominator is laden with drunken fans; songs about murder, suicide, and Yoko Ono; and the attitude of Motorhead meeting W.A.S.P. at a Dictators show. Chock full of aggressive riffs, speedy rhythms, and an overall sense of moral decay, this outfit embodies the spirit of unbridled rock 'n' roll to the hilt; and the live backdrop is the perfect companion for the beer-soaked carnage. http://www.superchrist.net

SUPERCHRIST: HEAVY METAL TONIGHT-BESTIAL ONSLAUGHT PRODUCTIONS

Having only seen Superchrist two times in their storied career, let's just say it's been a while. While I've kept up with them on tape, it'd been awhile and I wondered if their current material would be able to be pulled off live. They'd grown disc by disc and were once rather straightforward but current material has really progressed into some very strong songs with equal musicianship. Receiving this disc got my attention right away and I gotta say live, they walk it like they talk it. Tight and well prepared Superchrist lay it down and don't let up for air until all are under their spell. Well, something like that, they come on, kick ass and take names throughout this show, cool it was documented. 'Heavy Metal Tonight' captures them in all their glory. www.superchrist.net

Bestial Onslaught

I'm so ashamed I've never seen Superchrist live. I live in Pittsburgh, they're in Chicago. If you're familiar with geography of the Eastern US, you'll know that thats only about a few hours apart. If you're familiar with Superchrist, you should know that by now I should have hauled my ass to Ohio to catch a live show. Well, for all the sorry sons of bitches like myself who haven't been able to catch a live set yet, Superchrist has been gracious enough to record a live album to show us what we've been missing. I have no idea what the show really was like, but if this cd is any indication, it was a small but thick booze soaked crowd loaded into a small room and smoked alive by three guys who rock out like they've got a packed arena in front of them every time. They ripped through some of their best songs from three killer albums, giving you over 40 minutes of solid rock/metal that rivals the likes of Boulder, Speeddealer, Zeke and JJ Paradise Players Club. And you've gotta love Chris Black's attitude: "Either this is a hit single or you're a dick head!" I really need to catch these guys live, cause from the sounds of it it'll be one hell of a time. Keep an eye out for Superchrist.

SUPERCHRIST - Heavy Metal Tonight

As if suckling at the hairy, though life giving teets of Motorhead, Chicago's Superchrist strike me as one of the US's hardest working and most honest bands. Mixing the finer aspects of rock-n-roll, metal and punk certainly isn't anything new, but when this union obeys the proper levels of all genres involved and the band injects their own sense of piss and vinegar, magic happens. Having heard and thoroughly enjoyed Superchrist's "Back and Black" and "South of Hell" self released albums, "Heavy Metal Tonight" is a live album filled with cuts from both of those hook bloated classics, along with some other gems from their sizable catalog. Even though I found it odd that the crowd noise was bumped up so loud, but the overall mix and the power turned loose by this trio nicely rips through the speakers. The thunderous bass tone screems Lemmy worship as does the vocal phrasing and gruff shouting style of Chris Black. With Ace Frehley inspired (meaning VERY memorable) solo work and quite a tireless and punchy drummer holding the line all together, the rocking never stops and brings to mind some other obvious influences like Turbonegro. Superchrist proudly wear their influences on their sleeves and I gotta say that the formula works shot straight out of the chamber every time. Superchrist to me is the ultimate bar band. Hearing this material makes me want to curl up under the bar and catch all the spillage the beer wenches drizzle out of the tap every time a frosty mug is drawn. 1-2-fuck-you! -Marty WORM GEAR
